Worlds most popular car... now an EV!

Tesla Model Y: Leading the Charge as the World's Best-Selling Car in 2023

We're big fans of Electric Vehicles (EVs) at Ecotricity, and we want to see as many people driving them instead of their internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle counterparts. That’s why we’re thrilled to see the Tesla Model Y making history as the world’s best-selling car in 2023, the first time an EV has taken out top spot! This milestone is a game-changer, highlighting the shift toward EVs and the growing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.

The Tesla Model Y has topped global car sales charts, outpacing traditional ICE vehicles, specifically the Toyota Corolla which has held the #1 position for almost 10 years. Its rise to fame underscores the increasing preference for electric mobility. To learn more about Tesla Model Y’s global impact, check out further stats from 2023 in this article.

New Zealand's EV Revolution

Here in New Zealand, the EV revolution is well underway. With over 75,000 EVs on our roads, Kiwis are embracing the benefits of electric driving, from lower emissions to cost savings. This year so far (end of May 2024) there has been just over 2000 EV’s registered in NZ.

Great news for Kiwis, there are several banks offering green car loans and home loan top-ups with attractive interest rates to promote the purchase of EVs and other energy-efficient improvements. Check with your bank to see what options you have available.

Not only is getting an EV becoming increasingly easier, but the second hand EV market in NZ is booming. You can now buy a Nissan Leaf for less than $10,000 or a Tesla for under $40,000! Now that’s a bargain! If you’re interested in buying a second hand Tesla, check out Gav’s video on what to look out for.
