TRANSPOWER ALERT! New Zealanders asked to reduce power use tomorrow morning!
09/05/2024
New Zealand is bracing for a potential electricity supply gap from 7am to 9am tomorrow due to unusual cold weather and low wind power generation. Transpower is urging New Zealanders to assist by being mindful of their electricity usage during this critical period. This effort will help manage overall demand and ensure sufficient power for everyone.
Here are some ways individuals can contribute:
- Turn off heaters and lights in unused rooms.
- Postpone using appliances like washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers until after 9 am.
- Avoid charging electronic devices and electric vehicles between 7 am and 9 am.
While the morning is expected to be very cold, it's important to stay warm in occupied rooms while considering a slight temperature reduction (by 1-2 degrees) between 7am and 9am.
Transpower has issued a warning notice to industries today, highlighting the situation. Collaborating with electricity distribution companies nationwide, Transpower plans to temporarily deactivate controllable loads such as hot water systems tomorrow morning, a change most consumers won't notice as these systems are routinely cycled during the day.
Additionally, major industrial consumers have been requested to curtail electricity usage during the anticipated shortfall period.
In the event that these measures, combined with public conservation efforts, are insufficient to stabilize the power grid, Transpower may coordinate with distribution companies to implement short-term supply cuts in select areas. This precautionary measure aims to avert widespread and prolonged outages.
Individuals reliant on electricity for medical needs are advised to have contingency plans in place and contact emergency services at 111 if necessary.
