Two New Solar Farms in Ashburton

We’re excited to share that two new solar farms were set to power up in Gartartan, Ashburton, in December 2024. Developed by Lightyears Solar, these community-scale farms include a 1MW site owned by Lightyears Solar and a 5.8MW site owned by RCR Green Development, totaling 7.2MW of clean, renewable energy.

The solar farms are located on an eight-hectare portion of a 16-hectare rural lifestyle property, leased from a semi-retired couple. This innovative partnership allows the couple to supplement their farm income while continuing to graze sheep around the solar panels, ensuring the land remains productive.

Connected to the local Electricity Ashburton network, the project has involved local expertise wherever possible. Electrical work has been handled by McKay, while Sol Srv - Solar Services has managed the mechanical installations. Additional contributions, like planting, have also engaged local contractors, supporting the community and creating a truly collaborative project.
