How we can do our part to save the planet by 2050?
11/08/2019
Scientists estimate that if the world doesn’t make drastic changes to curb our emissions, by 2050 the world will be struggling to support 9 billion people amidst a rapidly changing climate with potentially destructive outcomes.
So much of what needs to be done has to come from governments and businesses. Businesses make up the bulk of emissions, which 100 companies responsible for 71% of global emissions. These companies have been chasing profit over sustainability and that has to change, or the world won’t sustain them for much longer. Governments have the power to force major changes, but they may be moving too slowly to prevent us reaching the point of no return.
Thinking of all these big numbers can make you feel helpless. You’re just one person. What can you do to help? Well, here are a few ideas that could have an impact.
1. Trust the scientists
The truth is, we’ve already wasted so much time debating whether climate change is happening, how bad it really is, and if it’s really a concern. Newsflash – climate change is real, it’s happening, and it’s a concern to everyone who lives on planet Earth.
Instead of getting into endless debates about climate change and arguing with people on the internet, put your energy into making changes. We need people who aren’t just talking, but actively making a difference.
2. Drive an electric vehicle
One of the best things you can do for climate change is to trade in your petrol or diesel vehicle for electric. This has an immediate impact on the amount of emissions entering the atmosphere, as well as on your wallet. You can also influence others in your circle to make positive changes by showing them how awesome it is to drive an EV.
3. Do something to benefit your community.
You don’t have to solve all the world’s problems, but you can make a big difference in a small community. For example, you could start a community garden. A garden helps to filter out carbon dioxide in the air, and it’s also good for wellbeing and happiness. A community garden can be a great way to educate others about the impact of climate change.
You could also organise a beach clean-up, come up with a nifty idea for recycling a certain product, or lobby local council for more resources.

4. Small changes add up
In order for the human race to survive for many more years to come, we’re all going to need to make lifestyle changes. The more changes you make NOW to help slow climate change, the less drastic changes you’ll need to make in the future.
Find small ways to make a difference by lowering the amount of waste you add to landfill and supporting renewable energy initiatives wherever possible. As a consumer, you have power – so vote with your dollar and companies and governments will be forced to listen.
5. Write to government
The government and local councils work for you, so write to them and tell them you want action on climate change. Make your voice heard.
As one person, you may think you can’t do much, but you have more power than you could ever know. Let’s put that power to good use!
