Global EV sales have skyrocketed!
31/07/2024
Global EV sales have skyrocketed to an all-time high in the second quarter of 2024, signaling a massive shift towards greener, cleaner transportation.
In Q2 of 2024, a staggering 3.1 million EVs were sold worldwide. That’s a 45% increase from the same period last year! Leading the charge is China, with Europe and the US not far behind. This boom in EV sales is a clear indicator that more people are choosing to drive electric, reduce their carbon footprints, and embrace sustainable living.
Here in New Zealand, with our commitment to 100% renewable energy and the growing infrastructure for EVs, Kiwis are making the switch in record numbers. In the last two years NZ has seen the most growth in the EV market compared to previous years, with over 75000 fully electric vehicles on the road! However there has been less growth in 2024 compared to 2023, which could be attributed to the removal of the clean car rebate and implementation of Road User Charges for EVs.

What’s fuelling this rapid adoption globally? Advances in battery technology, more affordable models, and the increasing availability of charging stations are making EVs more accessible than ever. Plus, the ongoing climate crisis is pushing more consumers to rethink their transportation choices. NZ banks are getting involved, offering their customers green loans with lower interest rates and better terms to incentivise the purchasing of EVs.

At Ecotricity, we’re thrilled to see this momentum. Every EV on the road brings us one step closer to a sustainable future. To think that years ago, for many people EVs were a fashionable or image enhancing choice (to be seen as combatting climate change) but now they also make financial sense. Whether you’re already driving electric or thinking about making the switch, know that you’re part of a global movement that’s driving positive change.
