Ecotricity Volunteers at Fair Food: Giving Back to the Community

At Ecotricity, our commitment to sustainability extends beyond providing climate-positive electricity. We believe in fostering a sense of community and giving back to those in need. Recently, our team had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer at Fair Food NZ, a charity dedicated to reducing food waste and feeding those in need.

Our first group of volunteers arrived at Fair Food NZ brimming with enthusiasm. As we donned our hi vis vests, we were briefed on the day's tasks: sorting through surplus produce donated by supermarkets and other food suppliers. Most of this produce, still perfectly good to eat, would otherwise go to waste.

Working together, we sorted fruits and vegetables, ensuring only the good quality items made it into the boxes destined for families and individuals in need, everything else was sorted into packs for immediate cooking (making meals for families) or compost. The sense of teamwork and camaraderie was palpable as we quickly settled into our roles. It was inspiring to see the immediate impact of our efforts, knowing that each box we packed would make a tangible difference in someone's life.

On the second day, a new group of Ecotricity volunteers took up the mantle. The experience of the first group had set a high bar, but our second team was up to the challenge. With renewed energy and a shared sense of purpose, we dove into the task at hand.

The process of sorting produce was both humbling and eye-opening. We learned about the extent of food waste in New Zealand and the critical role organizations like Fair Food NZ play in addressing this issue. Our team was more than just a group of volunteers; we became part of a larger movement towards sustainability and social responsibility.

Our time at Fair Food NZ was a powerful reminder of the importance of community involvement and the impact of collective action. At Ecotricity NZ, we are committed to more than just providing clean, renewable energy; we strive to make a positive impact in every aspect of our work. Volunteering at Fair Food NZ allowed us to contribute to a cause that aligns perfectly with our values of sustainability and community support.

We are incredibly proud of our team and their dedication to giving back. The experience was enriching and fulfilling, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Fair Food NZ in the future. Together, we can make a difference – one box of produce at a time.
