It’s official, Ecotricity is now Toitū climate positive certified!

We felt it was time to step it up, so we did.

What does it mean to be Climate Positive?

To achieve the climate positive certification we went through a rigorous process with Toitū Envirocare, beginning in August 2022, whose certifications are internationally recognised data-led and science-based environmental programmes. More specifically, to reach climate positive certification we are doing the following;

• Measuring the carbon footprint of our entire value chain;
• Setting absolute science-aligned reduction targets to lower our carbon footprint;
• Offsetting remaining emissions at 125% to go beyond neutrality;
• Contributing a further 75% of our carbon footprint by supporting local environmental and social projects.

Being climate positive certified means we have to constantly work towards our reduction goals, and continue to educate our customer and supplier base on decarbonisation and sustainability. There is no ‘done’ with climate positive, it’s an ongoing journey and we are so excited to be a part of it.

So why did we do it?

The average New Zealander emits over 6 tonnes of Co2 per year, of which about 1.4 tonnes comes from electricity usage.
