Metering Myth Busters

Smart meters record your consumption as half hour intervals which is then sent to your electricity provider.

Although smart meters are more efficient than analogue meters, many people are hesitant to upgrade for a variety of reasons. Below are a few pointers to shine a little light on some of the common contentions around the supposed dangers of smart meters.

Generic girl on phone Are smart meters extremely dangerous?

Smart meters operate by sending radio wave signals which some consumers fear may be detrimental to our health.

However, smart meters aren’t harmful. The truth is, smart meters create less radio frequency emissions compared to any other everyday items such as cell phones, microwaves and baby monitors. Smart meters send out metering data to your electricity provider once per day around midnight. That’s the equivalent of sending one single text from your cell phone per day!

Extensive studies by accredited organisations such as the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization agree that radio wave emissions are safe. Furthermore, these conclusions were reiterated by EMC technologies who found the emissions and power output were within required levels.

Metering activities in NZ operate under robust requirements established by NZ and international standards.
